5 steps to replace an SSD in a MacBook Pro 15 Retina Display Mid 2015

The process of replacing an SSD is not complicated, but the instructions must be followed. You should also follow the guidelines so that during the replacement process nothing is damaged and the device will operate reliably after the upgrade.

Below is the description of the process of a MacBook Pro Retina 15 SSD replacement

1. Preparing to replace the drive.

It is recommended that you back up the drive or create a bootable disc before replacing it. This is required for installing the operating system and transferring data to the new device.

After upgrading, it is best to install macOS 10.14 Mojave so that you don't have to search for and install a driver for the new SSD separately. Older versions of macOS do not have built-in SSD drivers.

2. Removing the back cover.

To access the drive, you must remove the back cover first:

  • Place the device with the back side up on a flat, non-slip surface;
  • Remove 10 screws (eight 3.1 mm and two 2.3 mm) with a P5 screwdriver;
  • Carefully pull the cover at the connection to the display to release it from the latches;
  • remove the cover and put it aside.

3 Disconnecting the battery from the motherboard

There must not be energy supply to the unit for your further work:

  • Remove the protective label that covers the battery connector;
  • Using a spudger, carefully lift the battery connector alternately on both sides and remove it from the socket on the motherboard;
  • unbend the connector in reverse position (towards the battery) so that it does not accidentally touch the motherboard socket.

4. Dismantling the old SSD

To remove the old SSD:

  • Use a Torx T5 screwdriver to remove the 2.9 mm screw that secures the SSD to the motherboard;
  • Lift the drive up so that it does not touch the adjacent speaker, but not too high, otherwise you can damage the connector;
  • Remove the SSD from the motherboard slot.

5. Installing a new SSD

The last step in MacBook Pro 15 Retina Display Mid 2015 SSD replacement. Once the new drive has been installed, proceed in the reverse order to reassemble the unit. When installing the back cover, ensure that the pins and clamps in the battery area are aligned. To put the cover back in place, press lightly in the center and snap it onto the clips.

When upgrading or repairing your Apple products, original spare parts and accessories must be used. This is the only way to ensure full compatibility and 100% performance compliance. It is recommended to buy the necessary parts from a reputable and certified retailer.
